- 2. Check the swatch and the generated formats.
- 3. Look at the suggested text color for the swatch.
- 4. Copy the format you need.
Three ways to write the same color
HEX, RGB, and HSL describe the same color in different ways. The tool converts between them automatically.
HEX
Six hexadecimal digits, two for each channel.
#FF6600 means red FF, green 66, and blue 00.
RGB
Each channel ranges from 0 to 255.
It is the format used by many image editing tools.
HSL
Hue in degrees, saturation and lightness in percent.
It makes lighter or darker variations of the same color easier.
Orange #FF6600
When you enter the HEX below, the tool shows the equivalent values.
#FF6600
rgb(255, 102, 0)
hsl(24, 100%, 50%)
For this orange, the suggested text color is white, because the color is not light enough for dark text.
Picker limits
The tool works with opaque screen colors.
- HEX must have six digits: the short form, such as #F60, and transparency are not accepted.
- The text suggestion uses a brightness estimate and does not replace a full accessibility contrast check.
- Print colors, such as CMYK and Pantone, are not converted.
